Blog - Narrative Representation
My narrative style is based on the Japanese literary genre of ‘watakushi shousetsu’, which focuses on first-person individual introspection in isolation from the wider cultural background. In retrospection, I found out the wider narrative framework of the story is actually quite similar with Shakespeare’s ‘Othello’, in which the protagonist falls in love with a woman from a different ethnicity, but is tempted to test their relationship. So in a sense, this is a modern take on a classic story which can potentially take place in a wide range of settings.

Nevertheless, we produced our original take on the story. The overarching genre of this film would be a psycho-thriller, and the specific background of this story is based on the ‘new-weird’ genre, which is in itself a major subversion of the traditional sci-fi, fantasy and horror genres. It conducts a postmodernist deconstruction of these conventions, such as applying fantasy to a modern setting in which typically abnormal elements such as ‘anyone can call the devil’ are now considered to be common sense. Blurring the line between fantasy and reality is a major twist on conventions which I established early on during planning.
